Today’s big story is about the United States and China.
China said it is thinking about starting talks with the United States. The talks would be about tariffs.
Tariffs are extra taxes that countries put on goods from other countries.
These taxes started because of a trade war.
The United States started this trade war first. Now, both countries are paying high taxes on goods they buy from each other.
China said this on Friday:
“If we fight, we will fight until the end. But if we talk, the door is open.”
This means China is ready to talk, but only if the U.S. is serious.
China also wants the U.S. to stop doing things it believes are unfair.
China said, “The U.S. should cancel the extra taxes and fix its wrong actions.”
Right now, China is making a list of some U.S. products that it may not tax anymore.
This is a way to make things better without losing face in public.
Some of the U.S. products that China may allow are:
Ethane (a type of gas),
Semiconductors (used in computers),
Medicines.
Even while talking about peace, both sides still act strong in public.
President Trump said China “deserves” the high taxes.
He also said China will pay the price.
But inside his team, people are talking about slowly lowering the taxes.
This week, good news came for U.S. car companies.
President Trump signed a new order.
This order says some car companies don’t have to pay extra taxes on car parts and steel.
But from May 3rd, some new taxes will begin on other car parts.
So, not all companies are safe from taxes yet.
The U.S. is also working on trade deals with other countries.
The U.S. Secretary of Commerce said a deal with another country is “very close.”
He did not say which country.
Another U.S. official, Mr. Bessent, said the U.S. is also close to a deal with India.
In more news, the Prime Minister of Canada, Mr. Mark Carney, will visit the White House next week.
He will talk about trade with the U.S.
He just won an election in Canada and spoke strongly against President Trump.
So in short:
China and the U.S. might start talking again.
Both sides want a better deal but are still being careful.
The U.S. is also working with other countries like India and Canada.
